What a wonderful, freeing way of acting on creative urges! I would love to know more about your formulas and how you weighted more color towards the center.
Thanks for asking this, Andrea--I am interested in learning about the formulas, too.
And I love, Stacey, that you identified what you liked about Kelly's composition and knew that you could weight the probability to achieve that effect.
I love the idea of a random number generator to,take oneself out of the decision making process. I was weaving placemats and threw 1/2” fabric strips into a paper bag and as chance would have it , they turned out better than I thought.
I love this post. I know what it is to be paralyzed by indecision and appreciate the opportunity to learn about Kelly's approach in his series and how you are using his idea to unlock something in yourself. Letting go of decision/indecison... what a tremendous gift!
Agreed! It felt like a breakthrough moment for me to be able to let go of the responsibility of making all the creative decisions. I’m interested to see just how far I can extend this approach in other projects, too. 🧐

I hope to share that soon! I started to add it to this newsletter but it was already getting to be a long read, so it’ll be in the next one. 🤓

I love this idea! I’m thinking about how to use chance more in my other projects, too. 😊

This is so wonderful. Its funny as recently I was looking into Ellsworth Kelly regarding the Kelly dress as a play on proportions and color https://www.metmuseum.org/art/collection/search/185392
Fascinating! I didn’t know his work extended into fashion, but I love the story behind this dress. Thanks for sharing!
Sounds like such a special experience, to receive a quilt as it’s being made! Loved reading about your experience with the surprise and delight of it.
